By Staff -- Playthings, 12/12/2008 2:05:00 PM
EL SEGUNDO, Calif.—Following a contract dispute, Konami Digital Entertainment has retaken control of all operational and business aspects of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game from distributor Upper Deck.
Konami is the exclusive licensee and rights holder to the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG in North America and in various countries in Latin America and Europe. Its management of the game is effective immediately, Konami announced yesterday.
"Konami Digital Entertainment is very pleased that the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game continues to be the number one TCG in the world. We are fully committed to maintaining a very high level of game support, from sales to organized play, and to providing a seamless transition during this process," said Kazumi Kitaue, KDE's chairman and CEO. "We look forward to having distribution of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game within our corporate umbrella as it allows us to take advantage of the synergies from our existing gaming platforms to ensure continued great products for the [players] and for our retail and distribution partners."
Upper Deck this week filed suit against Konami in the U.S. District Court in Nevada, charging the company with breaching their distribution agreement for the game.
The Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG debuted in Asia in 1996 and became a global sensation in 2002. More than 18 billion cards have been sold worldwide, according to Konami.

From ICv2: Gen Con LLC, which has been in Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings since February, has delayed the filing of its final plan and disclosure statement for emerging from bankruptcy as the result of an eleventh hour offer to purchase that arrived on the day before the plan was to be filed, according to Gen Con Chief Operating Officer Adrian Swartout. A hearing was held by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Washington last Friday, November 21st, at which the plan was to be presented, but a delay was granted as a result of the offer, Swartout told ICv2. Swartout declined to discuss the offer itself. Swartout confirmed that Gen Con's litigation with Lucasfilm was dismissed earlier this month in anticipation of a settlement. The offer to purchase Gen Con's assets, from Gen Con Acquisition Group (via LivingDice.com), "an organization to be formed," proposed a purchase price consisting of an assumption and payment of the Make a Wish debt incurred as part of the last Gen Con SoCal, plus interest; and payments of $900,000 in the first thirty days after closing and additional payments of $400,000 every six months until all approved bankruptcy claims were paid. Interest from the date of the deal would also be paid. In effect, the current owners of Gen Con LLC would be left with an empty shell after the payment of Gen Con's creditors, so the deal is to acquire the assets of Gen Con in exchange for paying its debts in full; current ownership would be left with nothing. The identity of the acquisition group was not disclosed; a lawyer from Louisville, Kentucky is the contact for the group. It's also unclear how much money the acquiring group plans to insert into the deal, since the assets being acquired include Gen Con's cash, which could presumably be used to fund at least some of the payments. If there were discounts to any debts negotiated as part of the reorganization plan that Gen Con had prepared to file, the new offer could present a higher pay-out to creditors. But the timing and security associated with payments would also be a factor for the company's creditors. The proposed Letter of Intent provides for a Breakup Fee of $50,000; there's also Bid Protection, in the form of a requirement for additional payments of $250,000 in cash or letter of credit over the amount of this offer. Conditions to closing include due diligence, a mutually agreeable asset purchase agreement, and approval by the court. More to come on this, we're sure. 11/24/08- Wizards of the Coast Star Wars Giveaway!

11/23/08- Blokus To Move To Mattel?
From Board Game News: The word on game industry forums is that Blokus and its related titles are moving from Educational Insights to Mattel starting in 2009. Neither company has returned calls requesting confirmation or denial of this news, and it's not clear how the newly released Blokus 3D fits into the picture as that game is based on Rumis and not an original member of the Sekkoïa line of games, Sekkoïa being the licensor of Blokus. Update, Nov. 17, 23:30 EST: Michelle at Mattel contacted me to confirm that Mattel is picking up both Blokus and Travel Blokus. She's "pretty sure" that Blokus 3D will also be part of the deal, but she's checking on that information as well as the status of Blokus Trigon. The titles will be part of Mattel's Fall 2009 line-up, which means the games will debut with the Mattel label in July 2009, according to her.

If you're interested in a copy of this great game before the holidays you may want to shop early, as situations such as this one tend to lead to shortages in product availability as we get closer to the transfer date.
Another great game line sold to one of the big two. 11/22/08- D&D Miniatures Skirmish Game- Good News!! Scott Rouse of Wizards of the Coast, made the following announcement regarding the future of the D&D skirmish game. We thought it might be of interest to a number of you:
D&D Skirmish Update! As I mentioned in D&D Podcast 28 and in my article D&D Miniatures Changes Explained it was our hope that the D&D skirmish community would continue to carry the skirmish torch for D&D Minis even after Wizards of the Coast had stopped producing the rules themselves. Shortly after the announcement, we received several formal requests to license the skirmish rules. Based on these requests we set out to model how we would want a community-driven effort to be structured and we came up with these general principles: The Goal: Grant an official license to community members to continue making skirmish stat cards for future D&D Miniatures releases. · The license would be royalty free and exclusive worldwide. · The license would be not-for-profit although the licensee could take "donations" to help cover expenses. · These would be the official D&D Minis skirmish rules as recognized by WotC. · WotC would retain the right to end the license and begin to develop the skirmish rules again at their discretion. · WotC would not review, playtest rules, or dedicate R&D resources to consult on the license but would retain the right to do so in the future. · WotC would provide the licensee with access to the use of copyright intellectual property including: · Miniatures character names and artwork · Proprietary icons & fonts · Use of D&D Miniatures trademark and logo · D&D Miniatures card template and layout · WotC would provide licensee early access to minis set lists and names in order to facilitate development of skirmish rules. · WotC would maintain tournament sanctioning and players ratings and rankings through the DCI database with the understanding that: · Licensee must use current play format nomenclature of Standard, Limited, and Vintage although they may define/redefine those formats at it's discretion. · Licensee will be responsible for maintaining and updating the tournament floor rules. · WotC would preserve existing database functionality for DDM but will not put resources into expanding or adding functionality.
With these goals in mind and formal proposals in hand we decided that the group known collectively as "The Guild" had the right people, experience, enthusiasm, and most importantly the overwhelming support of the players to take on this license. We're very excited to begin forming an official relationship with them to continue producing D&D skirmish rules moving forward. If you don't already know, The Guild is a group of dedicated D&D skirmish fans including Kevin "ktatroe" Tatroe, D. Garry "Tried" Stupack and Jim " JohnnyQuest" Ansaldo. These guys have been at the heart of the D&D Minis community since the beginning and their bios below speak to their passion for the game.
Kevin Tatroe has run the popular D&D Miniatures fansite Hordelings for five years. More recently, he took on the mantle of developing the DDM Oracle and DDM Comprehensive Rules Guide. He was co-designer of the War of the Dragon Queen restats, led the teams designing the Deathknell and Giants of Legend restats, and would have been seriously let down if the Gauth weren't tier 1. He has written numerous adventures for the RPGA, including numerous Xen'drik Expedition ones. By day (and often by night), he is a software engineer at Flying Lab Software and has written or contributed to several programming books. Kevin owns a frog hat, and he says he looks ridiculous in it. Garry began playing D&D Miniatures in 2003 as a way to share time and a common hobby with his son, Darien. As they became entrenched in the competitive side of the game, Garry was recruited to help support the Organized Play activities, and has been judging all types of WotC miniatures games at major cons since Gen Con So Cal in 2004 (he's also been the head judge for most of the events in the recent years after finishing in the top 8 at the constructed Championships in 2005 and 2006). Garry (and son) have both had Star Wars Miniatures scenarios and D&D Miniatures web articles published on the WotC web site, and Garry has been involved with the Wizards D&D Miniatures team since the coming of the Revised Battle Rules (check the credits inside). As the leader of several restat teams (beginning with the recently released Blood War), and a coauthor of the DDM Oracle resource, he's shown both a knowledge of the game and a dedication to it that make him a prime pick to sustain future D&D Miniatures skirmish game development. Jim Ansaldo has been playing D&D for thirty years and has been a D&D Miniatures enthusiast since Harbinger. In his online guise as JohnnyQuest, Jim has been a prolific contributor to the DDM community on several different forums. Jim currently serves as a Volunteer Community Lead on the WotC DDM forums and acted as the DDM Section Organizer, as well as a contest host, for this year's UnCon. Jim has judged local DDM tournaments and championship qualifiers in Bloomington, Indiana and filled the Head Judge role for the 2008 Constructed Championship Qualifier held at Origins. Most recently, Jim helped to organize the Hoosier Open -- Indiana's first statewide DDM event -- and he enjoys hosting a D&D Miniatures Club at a local school. Jim's RPG-related writing has been seen in Knowledge Arcana and Phoenix Lore, and he continues to work as a freelance designer for WotC, updating D&D Miniatures expansions to the current ruleset. In his other life, Jim works in the field of education, facilitating change efforts focused on creating inclusive school communities.
Last week we spoke with Kevin and Garry to discuss our initial thoughts on the license and I was thrilled on how it well it went. At one point on the call Kevin commented, "It's like you're reading off my list." It was good to hear we were on the right track. There are still things to be done on both ends of the table before work can begin, but we feel like we are going in a really good direction. It's good to know that the skirmish game will go on and that it will be in capable hands. Cheers! Scott Rouse http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/4news/20081120 11/17/08- Catalyst Games Bids on All WizKids Properties Catalyst Games has announced that it has submitted a bid for WizKids Games properties, including HeroClix, the Pirates PocketModel Game, Star Wars PocketModel TCG, BattleTech/MechWarrior, and Shadowrun. Catalyst already produces games based on BattleTech and Shadowrun under license from WizKids, which it says will continue in any case. The bid included not only those underlying properties but also the WizKids games based on them. Catalyst was not on our original shortlist of companies that came to mind as potential acquirers of the WizKids properties. But statements by company executives emphasized Catalyst's experience with licensed properties and its ability to ramp up for new acquisitions. "Catalyst has demonstrated our ability to manage large and important intellectual properties," Catalyst majority owner Loren Coleman said. Coleman recently met with Topps execs in New York to discuss the potential acquisition. And Operations Manager (and former WizKids employee) David Stansel-Garner talked about Catalyst's potential entry into a new category--CMGs. "While we would be new to the collectible miniatures market, we have proven experience in quickly acquiring the talent and infrastructure needed to produce high quality games," he said, referring to Catalyst's ramp-up in the wake of its acquisition of Battletech and Shadowrun licenses formerly held by FanPro. 11/17/08- Pinata Games Formed By Wizkids Employees To Acquire HeroClix A former WizKids Games employee has formed a new company, Pinata Games, for the purpose of acquiring the HeroClix Collectible Miniatures Game in the wake of the shutdown of WizKids. Brand Manager Jake Theis, supported by a Save HeroClix movement centered around HeroClix fan sites, is seeking investment and other support for their new company and its efforts to acquire the brand. A SaveHeroClix.com Website is up and operational as the current center for the new company's activities. WizKids Managing Director Justin Ziran is heading up the WizKids effort to support the line during the transition. 11/10/08- AT-43 and Confrontation Get New Home From ICv2:
Rackham's Confrontation and AT-43 miniature lines were acquired by a new company, Rackham Entertainment SAS, on October 28th. Rackham Entertainment was founded by venture fund Entrepeneur Ventures and Lucas Velimirovic, who's the CEO of the new company. Rackham SA had been under bankruptcy protection since August of last year. Most recently, Rackham's lines had been distributed in North America by Fantasy Flight; that relationship ended last month. The Rackham design studio had already designed the releases for the coming months; as a result, monthly releases for the next 12 months are already planned. Five boxed miniature groupings will be released simultaneously worldwide for each of the two Rackham universes (AT-43 and Confrontation) monthly beginning in November. Rackham Entertainment has committed to maintain its retail prices at the same levels through the coming year, bucking a trend that has seen the world's largest miniature company (Games Workshop) enact a major price increase recently. Beyond its plans for a steady, reliable release schedule, Rackham also has several initiatives planned to support sales of its products and expand the exploitation of its universes. Retailer support will include limited edition figures for stores and a retail store locator on its Website. Comic rights for the Rackham universes have been licensed to French publisher Soleil; Marvel is releasing some Soleil comics and collected graphic novels in the U.S.. Rackham also plans board games based on its universes. 11/10/08- R.I.P. Wizkids The Topps Company announced today that WizKids will immediately cease operations and discontinue its product lines. Scott Silverstein, CEO of Topps, said "This was an extremely difficult decision. While the company will still actively pursue gaming initiatives, we feel it is necessary to align our efforts more closely with Topps current sports and entertainment offerings which are being developed within our New York office." Upon notifying our partners, Topps will immediately pursue strategic alternatives so that viable brands and properties, including HeroClix, can continue without noticeable disruption. To that end, WizKids will continue supporting Buy it By the Brick redemptions for Arkham Asylum, and the December Organized Play events for HeroClix. For consumer announcements, please refer to www.wizkidsgames.com over the coming days for further information.

Wizards of the Coast announced they are reducing the amount of randomness to their booster packs, making it easier for rpg players to get the figures they need for their games.
From ICv2:
"We are changing our approach to our minis product line," Wizards of the Coast Senior Brand Manager for D&D Scott Rouse said of the company's major changes to Dungeons & Dragons Miniatures. WotC will move the line away from fully randomized packaging beginning next year. The final 2008 release, Demonweb, will be the last D&D Minis release sold in that format. WotC will also offer more player character minis and more large figures. Two new series will begin in 2009: Players Handbook Heroes and Monster Manual. Players Handbook Heroes will feature player character races and classes described in the Player's Handbook and Player's Handbook 2. The first of two series planned for 2009 will include 18 figures sold in six different packs of three, all of which will be fully visible. The six packs will be:
Martial Heroes 1 Martial Heroes 2 Arcane Heroes 1 Arcane Heroes 2 Divine Heroes 1 Primal Heroes 1 Each pack will include two male figures and one female and corresponding power cards. The set releases in Spring 2009, with one more Heroes set planned for 2009. Three Heroes series are planned for 2010.
The Spring 2009 Monster Manual release, Dangerous Delves, will be partially randomized. The 40-miniature set will come packaged in five mini packs, each with one visible figure, one rare figure, one uncommon figure, two common figures, and stat cards. The figures will be a mixture of medium and large figures. Wizards of the Coast is the second company to make a move away from collectable game packaging recently; Fantasy Flight Games has changed its collectable strategy for both miniatures and card games. 10/1/08- FRIDAY! 9/27/08- Please Go Buy Some Salad Dressing...
As you've probably already heard, actor and philanthropist Paul Newman passed away today succumbing to his battle with cancer. He was 83.
Only on the rarest of occasions are obituaries mentioned here, and this is the first for someone outside the game business. However, Paul Newman was first a humanitarian, second an actor and deserves the admiration of all.
If I had to choose a "hero" or a role model, Paul Newman would certainly rank at the top of my list. He successfully made his mark on Hollywood without being "Hollywood". Choosing to live his life privately in the farmlands of Connecticut rather than the glitzy environs of LA or New York, Newman always maintained a grounding uncommon for actors. He was married to the same woman, actress Joanne Woodward, for 50 years; no small achievement for anyone, but unheard of for the Hollywood set. He gave money to charity, lots of money- to date, a quarter of a billion dollars.
He took the fame that came with his success and exploited it to start charities and raise money for those less fortunate. In an era where politicians are taking money from taxpayers to bail out the greedy, Newman created some of the best-tasting food products around and donated all of the profits to charity. His food line would have made him an even wealthier man, but he chose to do some good in the world with it. Our politicians would be well-served taking some cues from Mr. Newman.
So, to honor this man, a world class humanitarian who happened to be an actor, please go to your local supermarket this weekend and try Newman's Own salad dressings, pasta sauces, or organic foods. You won't be disappointed in the flavor and you'll be helping out some deserving charities, most of which help children. Have dinner, and in a very small way help make a difference in this world.
Thank you, Paul Newman. You are a class act and will be missed.
No one can eat 50 eggs... except for you.
From the Newman's Own website:
We celebrate the inspirational life of our founder Paul L. Newman and honor his legacy with our dedication to the continued success of Newman's Own.
For 25 years, we at Newman's Own have had a front row seat to watch Paul's entrepreneurial brilliance, humor, and compassion at work helping those in need. Our company motto, "Shameless Exploitation in Pursuit of the Common Good," was Paul's vision for Newman's Own and it is a philosophy we are proud to continue.
Paul occasionally referred to Newman's Own as the "joke that got out of control" and would express astonishment at its success. Despite this humorous approach, Paul was committed to the company's business and to providing top-notch quality – he brought all-natural food products to a wide audience long before it was fashionable. And he was one of the greatest recyclers, giving back to charity all the money he earned from the sale of Newman's Own products. Shameless Exploitation in Pursuit of the Common GoodNewman's Own has grown into a powerful and lasting expression of Paul Newman's generosity. The Company has generated over $250 million in proceeds that have been donated by Paul Newman and the Newman's Own Foundation to thousands of charities worldwide. Particularly close to his heart were the Hole in the Wall Camps, now the leading global family of camps for children with life-threatening illnesses, which Paul started over 20 years ago. Today, Newman's Own is a thriving company with hundreds of millions of dollars in annual revenue. As always, all profits are donated to charity through Newman's Own Foundation. We will miss Paul, but we will honor his vision for the Common Good through dedicated stewardship of his company that will perpetuate his philanthropic legacy. Paul wouldn't have it any other way. 9/5/08- Fantasy Flight Games Announces Price Increases Fantasy Flight Games has just announced via this press release, due to rising costs associated with "energy, commodity and labor prices", virtually all of their game lines will experience price increases effective November 1st.
